What you loved was the cruelty.

The meanness, the spite, the ability to say whatever you wanted, to hurt anyone you wanted. Without retribution.

The chance to show your true heart. To call them ugly names. To shame them. Because it’s what you’ve wanted to do all along.

You didn’t have to hide your ugliness anymore.

Now you could hurt people with impunity. You did it with pleasure.

The cruelty was the point.

What you loved was the bullying.

The mocking of people other than you.

Tormenting people who didn’t look like you. Denying people who didn’t sound like you. Hurting people who didn’t believe like you.

You loved brutalizing people. …

This stuff is freaking middle-aged conservative white men out. And whenever they speak up…

It’s not as unusual as you think

The author and his family

Parenting’s a challenge, especially when you adopt children. It’s an even bigger challenge when those children come from foreign countries.

Many years ago, over a span of seven years, my wife and I adopted three children, one from Bolivia and two from Haiti. We’re both white, and both grew up in Indiana in the 1970s. As our family grew, we brought our children home to our small town and people quickly got used to seeing us. No one said anything to us about our family, at least not directly to us.

I’m not saying everything was sunny and welcoming; I’m…

For many professions, even after you receive your certification or degree, your learning is not over. In fact, many professionals have to continue their education through — what else? — continuing education classes, also called Continuing Education Units (CEUs). But finding CEUs for less than a typical college class can be a bit difficult. This article should help.

5 ways to find CEUs for less

If your job requires regular Continuing Education Units to keep your skills sharp, you might find these money-saving tips useful.

  • Get someone else to foot the bill.
  • Shop around.
  • Pool your resources.
  • Ask your professional organization to help.
  • Approach a local college…

Web designers and developers have an extra level of responsibility to their clients (and themselves) to protect online privacy. If you buy domain names, host websites, or even have conversations about proprietary information and private clients, you need to seriously consider how you protect your privacy online, including your personal information.

Web designers and developers should take special steps to help clients maintain online privacy.

Whether it’s about actual security — or just avoiding spammers, junk mailers and telemarketers — there are steps to reduce the odds of personal information getting into the wrong hands.

6 ways to protect online privacy

Here are a few tactics…

Given the number of data breaches at both large corporations and small businesses, online security is paramount for independent insurance agents who want to protect their clients and follow the appropriate regulations and laws. So how can you make that happen?

There are several things you can do to protect your computer network and your servers, but a lot of it starts with having the right kind of security on your website.

If you’ve been paying attention to your internet browser bar, you might have noticed that a lot of your favorite websites now start with HTTPS, instead of regular…

I was at a cybersecurity summit in 2015, listening to industry professionals and the FBI talk about all the different ways bad guys could infiltrate a company’s network, steal their data, wreck their business, use their website for nefarious purposes, and bring their world crashing down around their ears. Now, there’s a good reason for a website safety check.

It wasn’t a fun and delightful way to spend a fall afternoon, I can tell you. …

Entrepreneurs who want to try their hands at eCommerce might want to sell furniture online as a way to fill a specialty niche. Whether you make furniture, deal in retail or own a resale shop — antiques, reproductions, Scandinavian — you can sell your furniture further afield than any local furniture shop could ever hope to do by building an online store.

In 2015 online sales of furniture totaled about $14 billion, or 15 percent, of the entire furniture industry’s sales. And this is just part of the larger “furniture and home furnishings” industry — that $14 billion is for…

I’ll be here all week

But seriously, a good WordPress theme is important for any real estate…

Hands down, a real estate agent’s best option for a website is WordPress, especially when loaded with a few key WordPress real estate plugins to make it run smoothly.

That’s good news for any real estate agent who doesn’t want to spend a lot of time building a website or paying a lot for a static website that…
